DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University women's lacrosse took down Virginia Wesleyan University 16-11 for a victory Saturday on Daly Field at Frank R. Campbell Stadium, giving the Cougars' their first ever Old Dominion Athletic Conference win to stay unbeaten on Senior Day.
Up by only one at halftime, Averett (6-0, 1-0 ODAC) clamped down on defense in the third quarter, allowing just one goal by Virginia Wesleyan (2-7, 0-1 ODAC). Meanwhile, Averett got goals from three of its seniors—
Raven Felder,
Elizabeth Peasley and
Kelsey Steckroth — and one from sophomore
Faith Bowlin to extend the Averett lead to 13-9 entering the final period.
Virginia Wesleyan scored early in the fourth, but Averett got two more goals from Peasley around a goal from sophomore
Rachel Rios to help give the Cougars extra cushion. The Marlins scored one more time with 4:29 to play, but it wasn't enough as Averett held on.
Peasley scored five goals with one assist on Senior Day as she ran her season goal total up to 40 scores and pushed her career goals total to 352 — 10 goals shy of third place all-time in NCAA Division III women's lacrosse. Felder also finished with a hat trick. Bowlin, Steckroth and Rios each had two goals, and Steckroth added an assist.
Bowlin, who notched her 100th career point with her goal in the third quarter, led the team with six ground balls and 10 draw controls.
Senior
Morgan Dearing had a team-high two assists while also scoring a goal and junior
Irenia Torre chipped in a goal as well for the Cougars, who are off to their best start in program history.
Averett led 4-3 after one quarter, and the Marlins and Cougars each scored five times in the second quarter as Averett took a 9-8 lead into halftime.
Junior
Kaylee Joblon had 12 saves in goal for Averett, while junior
Porsha Davis had a team-high four caused turnovers with four ground balls.
Prior to the game, Averett celebrated its five seniors — Dearing, Steckroth, Felder, Peasley and
Rylie Leadore.
Averett hosts Ferrum College in ODAC action on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
