DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University men's lacrosse topped Husson University on Daly Field at Frank R. Campbell Stadium 11-8 on Wednesday night where the Cougars underclassmen put on a stellar performance.
In just his fourth game of his collegiate career, freshman attack
Tyler Duffey set the new program record with goals scored in a single game, netting six in the showing.
Averett (2-2, 0-1 ODAC) would strike first from Duffey's rocket into the back of the net from freshman
Anthony Garay at 9:23 in the first quarter. Husson (2-2, 0-0 NAC) answered less than a minute later from Nathan Vibber. The Cougars and Eagles would exchange scoring throughout the first quarter with Averett taking a 4-3 lead into the second quarter. The Cougars would jump out to a 6-3 lead in the second from back-to-back goals by Duffey just 32 seconds apart.
Averett would outscore Husson 5-1 in the second quarter, taking a 9-4 lead into the second half. The Eagles tried to mount a comeback in the third, scoring four goals compared to Averett's one.
The Cougars would seal the win away with 1:40 left in the game when Duffey picked up a loose ground ball off of sophomore
Brayton Powers' saved shot and sending a shot past Husson's airborne goalie to bring the final game score to 11-8.
Duffey led the team's offensive efforts with his six goals on seven shots on goal. Junior
Connor Taff netted two goals and handed out one assist, while Garay dished out two assists and had a goal, Powers rounded out the Cougars scoring tonight as he chipped in two goals. Freshman
Mike Hernandez led the defense, causing a team-high three caused turnovers, Taff and Powers each had two caused turnovers, while Taff had a team-high eight ground balls, the second most in a game during his career and sophomore
Jay Etheridge scooped up four ground balls.

Cameron Prutzman made 18 saves over 26 shots faces for a save percentage of 69.Â
Averett had a season-low of 17 turnovers while causing 17 turnovers compared to the Eagles four. As a team, the Cougars completed 20-27 of their attempted clears.
Averett is back in action when it hosts Virginia Wesleyan University at 5:30 p.m. on Friday in nonconference action.
