SALEM, Va. — Averett University baseball lost to Roanoke College 19-4 on Tuesday night.
Averett (5-21-1, 2-12 ODAC) was down 2-0 going into the second inning. Sophomore
Preston Robbins poked a single through the left side. Sophomore
Nick Romano followed up with a single up the middle to advance Robbins to second. Senior
Kyle Wilson smoked an RBI double into left field to score Robbins and send Romano to third. Sophomore
Cole McLain reached first on an error by the first baseman, scoring Romano in the process to even things up 2-2.
Roanoke (19-10, 11-3 ODAC) started off the bottom of the first with a triple hit to left center. The runner was sent home from third on a groundout to the second baseman. The Maroons added another run after a single and an RBI double shortly after to lead the Cougars 2-0. Roanoke managed to take the lead in the bottom of the second after it scored a runner on a sacrifice fly. In the third inning, the Maroons tacked on eight runs to take a commanding lead over the Cougars.
They later extended their lead to 19-2 and held the Cougars to two runs until the eighth inning. Freshman
Ryan Toney and sophomore
Zach Proctor were both walked, putting runners on first and second. The bases were loaded after McLain was hit by pitch. Junior
Brandt Brophy scored
Ryan Toney on a fielder's choice. In the top of the ninth, sophomore
Caden Grider was walked and later advanced to second on a wild pitch. Robbins was walked and Grider took third on a wild pitch. Toney scored Grider from third after he grounded out to third base.
Grider went 1-for-3 on the day, drawing two walks. Romano went 1-for-2. Wilson went 1-for-3 with an RBI on the score sheet.
The Cougars are back in action on Thursday when they face William Peace University at 5 p.m.
