CARY, N.C. — Averett University baseball fell to William Peace University on Thursday evening 19-10.
Freshman
Zach Proctor slapped a single up the middle in the top of the second with one out. Senior
Nolan Maccabe ripped a double into right field to send Proctor to third. Junior
Brandt Brophy hit a single to right center to score Proctor, Brophy advanced to second on the throw. Freshman
Chris Byrd was hit by pitch. Junior
Chase Davis singled to left center send Maccabe home and load up the bases. Senior
Kyle Wilson singled through the left side to score Brophy. Sophomore
Cole McLain was hit by pitch to advance Byrd home. Davis was sent home on a balk. Wilson scored on a groundout to the shortstop to extend Averett's (5-22-1, 2-12 ODAC) lead to 8-1.
In the top of the first inning, Maccabe led off with a double down the left field line. He was sent home by Byrd after he smacked a single into right field. Byrd advanced to second on a wild pitch and later scored following an RBI single hit by sophomore
Cole McLain to lead William Peace (17-13, 8-4 USA South) 2-0. The Pacers chipped away at the lead in the bottom of the first, scoring a run from third on an RBI single.Â
William Peace tacked on four runs in the bottom half of the inning to cut the deficit down to 8-5. The Pacers continued to chip away and eventually took the lead in the third inning. Going into the seventh inning, William Peace led the cougars 16-8. Sophomore
Kevin Zischke smoked a double to right center. Proctor was hit by pitch. Brophy was walked to load the bases. Byrd hit a sacrifice fly out to center field to score Zischke. The Pacers continued to string hits together to put three more runs on the board in the eighth inning. Freshman
Ryan Toney poked a single through the left side. McLain singled to left field to advance Toney to second. Toney advanced to third following a double play. Zischke singled to left center to score Toney.
The Cougars had hot bats all game. Maccabe went 2-for-4 with two doubles. Byrd went 1-for-2, scoring two RBIs. Zischke went 2-for-2 with an RBI on the stat sheet. Proctor went 2-for-4.
The Cougars are back in action on Saturday for a conference doubleheader against No. 7 University of Lynchburg at home beginning at noon.
