DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University baseball lost to No. 7 University of Lynchburg 11-1 and 12-0 in conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon on Owen-Fulton Field.
In the bottom half of the third inning, senior
Kyle Wilson swatted a single to third base. Wilson advanced to second after sophomore
Nick Romano grounded out to the shortstop. Sophomore
Kevin Zischke poked a single into right center to bring Zischke home from second to put Averett (5-24-1, 2-14 ODAC) on the board.
In Game 1, Lynchburg (26-4, 14-2 ODAC) scored four runs in the top of the first inning. The Hornets kept the hot bats, leading the Cougars 8-0 going into the bottom of the third inning. The Cougars held the Hornets to eight runs until the top of the sixth when they hit an RBI single to left center to add on another run. In the top of the seventh, Lynchburg tacked on two more runs to finish off Game 1.
In Game 2, Lynchburg scored two runs early to lead the Cougars 2-0. Going into the fourth, the Hornets tallied three additional runs. In the top of the fourth, sophomore
Nathan Comer relieved freshman
C.J. Collins. Comer held the Hornets to six runs until the seventh inning, where he gave up his first hit and run of the game. Comer was relieved in the top of the eighth. The Cougars struggled in the inning, walking three batters home in addition to two RBI singles.
In Game 1,
Kevin Zischke went 2-for-3 with a walk and the only RBI scored for the Cougars. Freshman
Ryan Toney went 2-for-3 in Game 2.
The Cougars are back in action on Tuesday when they host N.C. Wesleyan University at 2:30 p.m. on Owen-Fulton Field.
