DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University baseball lost to N.C. Wesleyan University 13-6 on Tuesday afternoon at Owen-Fulton Field.
In the bottom of the second inning, sophomore
Nick Romano started the inning off a single up the middle. Senior
Nolan Maccabe slapped a single through the left side to advance Romano to second. Romano advanced to third on a wild pitch and Maccabe later stole second. Sophomore
Mason Williams was walked to load up the bases. Junior
Brandt Brophy batted in Romano on a fielder's choice to the shortstop. Sophomore
Cole McLain smoked a double to right center to score Brophy and Maccabe to extend the Averett (5-25-1, 2-14 ODAC) lead to 4-0.
Brophy singled to right center in the bottom of the first inning. He stole second to get in scoring position. Sophomore
Tyler Wilson cracked a double down the left field line to score Brophy from second. In the top of the third, N.C. Wesleyan (24-8, 12-3 USA South) had runners on first following two consecutive batters being hit. The next batter hit an RBI double paired with a throwing error to cut down the Cougar lead to 4-2.
After a series of walks, hit batters and wild pitches, the Battling Bishops strung together a few hits to lead the Cougars 5-4. N.C. Wesleyan tacked on three more runs going into the bottom of the sixth. McLain was walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Wilson swatted a single to left field to allow McLain to reach third. Freshman
Zach Proctor batted in McLain with an RBI single. In the seventh, N.C. Wesleyan had a two-run blast over the left field fence to extend their lead to 11-6. In the late innings, the Battling Bishops put two more runs on the board to solidify the win over the Cougars.
McLain went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Wilson and Romano also went 2-for-4 with an RBI each.
The Cougars are back in action on Wednesday when they travel to face Guilford College at 3 p.m.
