BRIDGEWATER, Va. — Averett University softball finished its weekend road trip with a pair of tough losses, falling to Bridgewater College 6-3 and 3-1 on Sunday in Old Dominion Athletic Conference play.
Â
In Game 2, Bridgewater (18-12, 8-2 ODAC) went up 1-0 on a squeeze bunt in the second inning. Averett (7-25, 2-12 ODAC) managed to tie it up in the fourth inning. With the bases loaded, junior
Olivia Jones singled to right-center, scoring senior
Karsin Lee to knot it, 1-1. Bridgewater then induced a lineout to right field to end the threat by the Cougars.
Bridgewater took a 3-1 lead in the fifth after an error prolonged the inning. It eventually led to back-to-back run-scoring hits for the Eagles. The two-run advantage held up over the final two innings.
Averett scattered five hits in the second game as freshman right-hander
Hannah Zabik allowed only three runs — one earned — on six hits.
Â
In the opener, Bridgewater opened with a 2-0 lead in the first, but Averett quickly got one of the runs back in the top of the second on freshman
Mackenzi Luckenbaugh's RBI sacrifice fly. Down 2-1, Averett jumped in front in the fourth. Freshman
Kailey Gates' RBI single tied the game, 2-2, and junior
Taylor Sullivan drew a bases-loaded walk to bring home sophomore
Angela Rodriguez to give the Cougars' a 3-2 advantage.
Bridgewater surged back into the lead on a pair of RBI doubles in the fifth inning, then added an RBI double before scoring another insurance run on an error in the sixth to go up 6-3.
The Cougars had four hits in Game 1, including a triple by Lee.
Averett returns home on Saturday for a Senior Day matchup against University of Lynchburg at 1:30 p.m.
