NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Averett University softball lost both games of a doubleheader against No. 2 Christopher Newport University on Sunday. The defending national champion Captains won 11-0 and 16-0, both in five innings.
 
In Game 2, CNU (23-5) took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on two-run double. The nationally ranked Captains then began to pull away in the second. Brooke Greaver smacked a grand slam as part of an eight-run inning for CNU. The Captains tacked on three more runs in the third and three in the fourth.

Sophomore Angela Rodriguez and freshman Mackenzi Luckenbaugh had Averett's two hits in Game 2.

To open the day, Averett (7-27) gave up two runs in the first inning before a two-run homer made it 4-0 in the second inning. CNU scored three in the third and four in the fourth to help end the game after five innings of play.

Averett hosts University of Lynchburg on Monday beginning at 1 p.m. The game, which is Averett's Senior Day and final home contest of the season, was originally scheduled for Saturday but it was moved to Monday because of rain the region. Read Full Article
