GREENSBORO, N.C. — Averett University baseball lost to Guilford College 7-3 on Wednesday afternoon in Old Dominion Athletic Conference action.
Junior Brandt Brophy was walked in the top of the first. Sophomore Tyler Wilson slapped a single into left field to advance Brophy to second. Freshman Chris Byrd swatted an RBI single to send Brophy home giving Averett (5-26-1, 2-15 ODAC) a 1-0 lead.Â
Guilford (8-14-1, 7-9-1 ODAC) answered back in the second, with a two-run blast over the left field fence to take the lead. In the third, sophomore Kevin Zischke reached first on a walk. Brophy smacked a single into left field, sending Zischke to second. Zischke and Brophy advanced to second and third on a sacrifice bunt from sophomore Cole McLain. Wilson grounded out to the shortstop to score Zischke from third. The Cougars took the lead once more following a triple from sophomore Mason Williams and a groundout to put Averett up 3-2. Guilford tacked on five more runs to defeat the Cougars.
Williams went 2-for-4 with a triple on the score card.Â
The Cougars are back in action on Saturday when they travel to face Hampden-Sydney College for a conference doubleheader beginning at noon.
