HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. — Averett University baseball lost to Hampden-Sydney College 5-4 and 13-2 in conference doubleheader on Sunday afternoon.
Sophomore
Caden Grider smoked a double into left field. Junior
Chase Davis came in as a pinch hitter and squared up an RBI single into left center to score Grider and reduce the deficit to 4-2 in Game 1.
In Game 1, Hampden Sydney (19-15, 12-7 ODAC) struck first in the bottom of the fourth with a solo home run. In the top of the fifth, sophomore
Nick Romano poked a single down the right field line. Sophomore
Kevin Zischke was walked to advance Romano to second. Junior
Brandt Brophy slapped a single into left field to put Romano on third and Zischke on second, loading the bases. Sophomore
Cole McLain swatted a single to left field, scoring Romano to tie the game up 1-1.
In the bottom half of the inning, Hampden-Sydney tacked on three runs due to the Cougars' struggles finding the strike zone, paired with a couple of errors. Following the fifth inning, Averett (5-28-1, 2-17 ODAC) held the Tigers scoreless, entering the eighth inning. In the ninth, Romano lead off with a double down the left field line. Zischke poked a single into right field to send Romano to third. Brophy swatted an RBI single to left field to score Romano. Grider ripped a double into right center to score Zischke and tie the ball game up 4-4. In the bottom of the inning, Hampden-Sydney got a walk-off sacrifice fly to end Game 1.
In Game 2, Hampden-Sydney hit a three-RBI triple and tacked on an additional run to lead the Cougars 4-0. The Tigers kept the momentum going, leading 12-0 in the sixth inning. Senior
Kyle Wilson belted a two-run home run in the seventh inning. Hampden-Sydney put one more run on the board in the bottom of the seventh to defeat the Cougars.
In Game 1, Brophy went 4-for-5 with an RBI. Grider went 3-for-5 with three doubles and an RBI.
The Cougars are back in action on Tuesday when they host Ferrum College at 3 p.m.
