DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University baseball lost to Ferrum College 8-6 on Tuesday afternoon at Owen-Fulton Field.
Averett (5-29-1, 2-18 ODAC) was down 8-3 going into the bottom of the ninth inning. Sophomore
Caden Grider smoked a double through the left side to lead off. Grider advanced to third on a groundout to second. He crossed home plate after a wild pitch. Sophomore
Mason Williams was hit by pitch to reach first. Senior
Kyle Wilson cracked a double into left field to score Williams. Sophomore
Gavin Colwell came in as a pinch hitter. He swatted a single into right center to send Wilson home.
In the first inning, Ferrum (14-21, 8-12 ODAC) got on the board following a fielding error to lead the Cougars 1-0. In the third, the Panthers added an additional run after a sacrifice fly into shallow right center and the runner slid under the tag at home plate. Junior
Brandt Brophy poked a single into left field to lead off the bottom of the fourth. He later stole second. Grider hit a single into center field to score Brophy. Grider advanced to second on a wild pitch and later scored on a single hit up the middle by sophomore
Nick Romano to reduce the deficit to 3-2.
In the next inning, Ferrum added on another run. In the seventh, Grider slapped a single into left field. Williams hit a single through the left side to advance Grider to second. Junior
Chase Davis swatted a single into left field to score Grider and bring the Cougars within one run. The Panthers tacked on four runs in the top of the eighth.
Brophy went 2-for-4 with a stolen base. Grider went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
The Cougars are back in action on Wednesday when they host William Peace University at 2:30 p.m. on Owen-Fulton Field.
