DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University baseball fell to William Peace University 13-9 on Wednesday evening at Owen-Fulton Field.
Senior
Nolan Maccabe smoked a triple into right field and later scored on a wild pitch. Junior
Brandt Brophy was walked. Junior
Chase Davis poked a single up the middle to advance Brophy to second. Sophomore
Caden Grider hit a single to the pitcher to load the bases. Sophomore
Nick Romano slapped a single to third base to advance the runners and score Brophy. Davis scored on a wild pitch to allow Averett (5-30-1, 2-18 ODAC) to take a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the third.
In the bottom of the first, sophomore
Gavin Colwell reached first after being walked. Brophy was walked as well, sending Colwell to second. They later advanced to second and third after a balk. Davis swatted the ball into left center to score Colwell and Brophy. William Peace (20-17, 11-7 USA South) put a run on the board following a fielding error and tacked on two more on a two-RBI single to take the lead in the top of the second. In the next inning, the Pacers extended their lead to 4-2.
In the sixth inning, the Pacers tacked on two runs to take the lead. The Cougars had a rough inning in the seventh. Four runners were scored on walks in addition to a couple of RBI singles for the Pacers to take a 13-5 lead. In the bottom of the seventh, Grider reached first on a fielding error on the third baseman. Romano reached first on a walk to put Grider on second. Grider reached third on a wild pitch. Sophomore
Kevin Zischke poked a single to the pitcher to score Grider.
In the bottom of the eighth, Maccabe singled through the left side and was later sent home following an RBI-double hit by Colwell. Davis and Grider were both walked to send Colwell to third and load the bases. Colwell scored after Romano was walked. In the bottom of the ninth, junior
Hudson Rowe singled up the middle. Maccabe smacked a single into right field. Colwell was hit by pitch to load the bases. Rowe scored on a wild pitch.
Maccabe went 3-for-4 with a triple. Davis and Romano had a pair of RBIs each.
The Cougars are back in action on Saturday when they host Eastern Mennonite University for their senior day in a conference doubleheader beginning at noon.
