Nash's career night powers women's volleyball to ODAC win at Lynchburg as Stevens surpasses 1,500 assists

LYNCHBURG, Va. - Averett University women's volleyball took down the University of Lynchburg 3-1 on the road Tuesday night in its Old Dominion Conference opener.

Lynchburg (2-4, 0-1 ODAC) and Averett (4-4, 1-0 ODAC) traded leads for majority of the first set. Junior Kinsley Stevens recorded her 1,500 career assist with the Cougars leading 13-10 in the opening set. The Hornets took a timeout with Averett ahead 21-17 in the first set, Lynchburg went on to score six consecutive points to help them gain the momentum for a 25-22 set 1 win. Averett hit .068 percent in the first set while Lynchburg hit .026 percent.

Averett took an early lead in the second set thanks to an 8-0 run, including three consecutive kills by senior Emma Nash to propel the Cougars to a quick 25-17 win in set 2 over Lynchburg. In set three Averett went ahead as much as seven points before grinding out a 25-22 win.

Averett took the deciding set in a comeback as the Hornets led 21-18 headed into an Averett timeout. The Cougars used a 7-1 scoring run to take the final set 25-22.

The Cougars had three players with career-high nights in the win. Senior Emma Nash her herself a career-high night with a team-high 18 kills. Fellow senior Destiny McIntosh cranked out a career-high 10 kills and freshman Allie Wilkerson had nine. Stevens handed out 28 assists in the win and sophomore Dayton Moore had 22.

Defensively, Averett had 71 digs in the match with senior Erin Gray leading the team with 24 digs. Moore totaled 12 digs and junior Kayleigh Gentry had 11. Averett totaled five blocks as a team while Lynchburg had nine.

As a team, the Cougars had a .214 hitting percentage and .314 hitting percentage in the fourth set. Wilkerson had a team and career-high .500 hitting percentage. Averett held the Hornets to under a .150 hitting percentage for three out of the four sets.

Averett moves to 18-7 all-time against the Hornets and have won six out of the last seven meetings between the two.

Averett is back in action on Thursday for a tri-match against Virginia University of Lynchburg and Pfeiffer University starting at 3 p.m..
