LYNCHBURG, Va. — Averett University women's soccer benefitted from two goals in the first half to help the Cougars take down Randolph College 3-1 in their Old Dominion Athletic Conference opener on Saturday afternoon.
Junior Celia de Diego put in her team-leading fifth goal of the season in the 27th minute to give Averett (3-3-2, 1-0-0 ODAC) a 1-0 advantage. Sophomore Isobel Evans found de Diego, who when high center with the scoring shot. Moments later, an own goal by Randolph (5-2-0, 0-1-0 ODAC) in the 30th minute extended the Cougars' lead to 2-0.
Randolph closed the gap to 2-1 with a goal in the 58th minute, but Averett responses with a score in the 69th minute with a nice goal to the low right from sophomore Erika Lindstrom to push the Cougars' lead back to two.
Junior Tiffany Hargett made five saves in goal for the Cougars to improve to 2-0-1 in between the pipes.
Averett, winner of two in a row, hosts Sweet Briar College on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
