Women's volleyball winning streak halted by Randolph-Macon

DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University women's volleyball had its six-match winning streak halted with a 3-1 home loss to conference foe Randolph-Macon College on Friday night in the Grant Center. The Yellow Jackets won 25-17, 24-26, 25-19 and 25-19.

Averett (10-5, 5-1 ODAC) opened the first set with a 9-7 lead over Randolph-Macon (10-4, 5-1 ODAC) before the Yellow Jackets used an 11-1 run to take a 18-10 advantage on their way to winning the first set. The Cougars, however, bounced back in Set 2. Down 19-16, Averett got four consecutive kills by freshman Hope Parrish to jump in front, 20-19. The Cougars were able to swat away the Yellow Jackets in extra points, 26-24.

In the third set, Averett led 12-8 until a five-point swing shot Randolph-Macon into the lead. The Yellow Jackets methodically extended their lead to win the frame and take a 2-1 lead in the match. Randolph-Macon pulled away midway through the fourth set. Although Averett made a run to get within 19-18, the Yellow Jackets scored six of the final seven points to clinch the match.

Despite the loss, Averett got a 28-dig performance from senior libero Erin Gray, who moved within 27 digs of Averett's career record in the 25-point scoring era.

Junior setter Kinsley Stevens added 20 digs and 14 assists, sophomore setter Dayton Moore and 16 digs and 13 assists and junior Kayleigh Gentry tallied 12 assists for the Cougars. Senior Emma Nash also had a double-double with a team-high 13 kills to go with 10 digs.

Averett hosts Virginia Wesleyan University at 11 a.m. on Saturday, followed by Senior Day just before its 2 p.m. match with Christopher Newport University.
