DANVILLE, Va. – Averett University women's volleyball lost its last match on the season-opening homestand to visiting Pfeiffer University, 3-0, on Thursday night at the Grant Center.
The opening set went as well as it could for Averett (0-5), as the Cougars notched 12 kills throughout and also held Pfeiffer (1-4) to a .167 hitting percentage. Down 22-18 late, Averett took three straight points to come within one, but the Falcons replied back with three consecutive points of their won to clinch the set.
The Falcons advanced to win the second set 25-16, and were in the driver's seat up 13-8 in the third stanza. The home team awoke itself with a 7-1 run after to storm back into the match, then clawed out of another deficit later on to bring the set score to 20-19. Battling point for point, Pfeiffer ultimately pulled out the sweep in the later points with a 25-20 set win.
Three Cougars were atop the kill leaderboard tonight, with senior outside hitters
Sydney Mounce and
Tahani Villines, along with senior middle hitter
Allie Lane with six across the board. Junior setter
Megan Litman hit .500 with four kills, to go along with nine assists and four digs.
Villines led all home players with 12 digs defensively, while freshman setter
Hannah Batista totaled 14 assists, along with eight digs. Team-wise, the Cougars barely trailed Pfeiffer in kills 36-34, while they led in total digs, 50-47.
Averett treks away from the Grant Center for the first time in 2026 next, as it travels to Sweet Briar College on Tuesday, Sept. 15. The Cougar's Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) opener is set for 6:30 p.m.
