HAMPTON Va. — Averett University went undefeated in Day 1 of the Virginia Duals, defeating Camden County College 48-6 and King University 22-18 on Friday evening.

Heavyweight senior Trent Ragland won by fall against Dimitris Katsimichas in under a minute in Averett's dual against Camden County. Ragland sealed his team's fate to advance to the semifinals After he defeated King's Jacob Telles by sudden victory.

At 125 pounds, junior Mason barrett dominated his first opponent, pinning Yasin Carter just before the two-minute mark. In his match against King, he did not allow his opponent a single point in his 17-0 victory by technical fall.

Freshman A.J. Orlando III defeated Kyle Pickard by a 9-3 decision in his first match. Orlando carried the momentum into his second match where he pinned Franky Medina at 7:00 in the 133-pound weight class. 

At 141 pounds, senior Mauricio Reyes defeated Elijah Clark in a 17-3 technical fall. Junior Jesse Alvarado defeated his first opponent in an impressive 19-1 technical fall victory. Alvarado lost to Demetri Teddlie by a 19-13 decision. 

Junior Khalil Mitchell dominated, not allowing a single point to be scored against him. He defeated William Chrysler by a 17-0 technical fall in the 174-pound weight class. Mitchell racked up another technical fall against Vincent Galay, 15-0. 

At 184 pounds, sophomore Nolan Gerwitz pinned Tyler Willis just under three minutes in Averett's dual against Camden County. Senior Jaleel Jones had the fastest pin of the day, he pinned Jeremiah Gregoire under 40 seconds in the 197-pound weight class. 197-pounder Jamar Christian defeated Ethan Lopez in a tight 12-11 decision.

The Cougars are back in action on Saturday for Day 2 of the Virginia Duals at 4:30 p.m. against Elizabethtown College. Elizabethtown took the Cougars down in the semifinals last year at the Virginia Duals, 19-17.
