LEXINGTON, Va. — Averett University wrestling received its first Old Dominion Athletic Conference loss of the season against No. 21 Washington and Lee, losing 19-18 in a tie-break on Saturday night.

After Averett (19-6, 3-1 ODAC) won its first two matches of the night, Washington and Lee (10-4, 4-1 ODAC) went on a run, earning a win in the next four weight classes, which gave the Generals a 12-10 lead. Averett managed to take the lead once more, 14-12 after junior Khalil Mitchell got a 18-4 major decision in the 174-pound weight class. 

Senior George Moseley was able to score for the Cougars when he was got the 14-3 major decision against Jacob Wright in the 184-pound weight class.

In the the 125-pound weight class, junior Mason Barrett dominated David Rubin by a 15-0 technical fall, who is ranked No. 7 in the region. Barrett is currently No. 1 in the region and No. 6 in the nation. At 133 pounds, freshman A.J. Orlando III earned the Cougars five more points after defeating Isaiah Wilson in a 20-2 technical fall. 

Senior George Moseley was able to score for the Cougars when he was got the 14-3 major decision against Jacob Wright in the 184-pound weight class. Washington and Lee closed the gap when John Santowski handed Jamar Christian his first loss of the season in a tight, 5-2 decision. It all came down to the heavyweight matchup between senior Trent Ragland and John Ryan Sedovy. Ragland is ranked No. 10 in the nation and No. 2 in the region. Sedovy is ranked No. 5 in the region. Sedovy got a late takedown in the third period along with an escape to defeat Ragland by a 5-1 decision. Since Washington and Lee won six out of ten matches, they were awarded a point in the tie-break because the Generals had more individual wins.

The Cougars are back in action on Thursday when they face Greensboro College at 7:30 p.m. on the road.
