WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. — Averett University wrestling completed the Penn College Invitational tied for first place as a team. The Cougars yielded four champions, 14 individual placers and one wrestler who won Most Outstanding Wrestler in the tournament on Saturday afternoon.

Senior heavyweight Trent Ragland had a dominant performance, going undefeated to be crowned champion. His first bout was against his teammate, sophomore Braeden Fluke. Ragland pinned Fluke to advance to the semi-finals. He went up against No. 5 in the region Robert West, Ragland kept the momentum going to defeat his opponent by a 15-3 major decision. In the finals, he defeated Logan Flynn in a tight 2-1 decision, which allowed Averett to tie Delaware Valley University for first place. Ragland went on to receive the Most Outstanding Wrestler award.

At 149 pounds, junior Jesse Alvarado made his first appearance since last season. He had an outstanding performance, securing first place. In his first match, Alvarado defeated Joseph Kennedy by a commanding 16-1 technical fall. In his next bout, Alvarado pinned his next opponent in just under three minutes. He managed to pin Ricky Horger in the semi-finals. He solidified his position as champion with an 18-10 major decision against Greg Croce.

Junior Anthony Taylor went on to be crowned champion in the 165-pound weight class. Taylor started off hot with a 20-3 technical fall in his first match. Against Darius Mangiafico, he racked up another win by technical fall. He won by a 16-11 decision in the semi-finals and defeated Adam Coleman in the finals by a 9-4 decision.

In the 184-pound weight class, sophomore Nolan Gerwitz came in first place. In just under three minutes, Gerwitz pinned his first opponent. In the semi-finals, Gerwitz dominated his opponent, winning by a 15-0 technical fall. In the first-place match, Gerwitz went up against his teammate, sophomore Jacob Jiminez. Gerwitz defeated Jiminez by a 19-9 injury default. Jiminez finished in second after losing to Gerwitz.

Junior Khalil Mitchell placed third in the 174-pound weight class. Mitchell collected a technical fall and a fall before losing in the semi-finals. At 197 pounds, senior Jaleel Jones finished the tournament in fourth place. Jones managed to get a 13-0 major decision win in his first match and a 3-2 decision in the quarter-finals. 

At 133 pounds, freshman A.J. Orlando III finished fifth in the tournament. Against Matthew DiGennaro, he won by a 19-2 technical fall. Senior Alex Logsdon completed the contest in fifth place. At Heavyweight, Fluke finished fifth and in the 149-pound weight class, freshman Carter Shupert finished fifth as well. The Cougars had three wrestlers finish in sixth place: At 125 pounds, freshman Patrick Burdshall, 197-pounder, freshman Luis Reyes and senior Olli Karjalainen in the 141-pound weight class.
