RALEIGH, N.C. - Averett University women's volleyball came up short against Southern Virginia University, losing 3-2 in a thriller five set non-conference match and defeating William Peace University 3-1 in four sets on the road Saturday.
Southern Virginia (12-9, 8-1 USA South) started off hot, taking Set 1 25-18. Averett (9-12, 4-3 ODAC) held the Knights for Sets 2 and 3, winning both 25-22 and 25-17. The Knights won Set 4 25-22, bringing the score to 2-2 before taking Set 5 15-10.
William Peace (11-10, 4-4 USA South) was able to take Set 1 with a close score of 25-15. Averett was able to pick up momentum, taking the next three sets 25-18, 25-13 and 25-22, respectively.
Sophomore
Sydney Mounce stood out in both matches, collecting 14 kills each. Freshman
Emily McIntosh was not far behind Mounce in the first match, recording 12 kills for the Cougars.
Freshman standout
Megan Litman led the offense with 30 assists in the first match, and 20 in the second. Fellow senior
Kinsley Stevens was not far behind, with 18 assists in match one, and 15 in match two.
Fifth-year libero and two-time ODAC Defensive Player of the Week
Erin Gray led the defensive charge, collecting 29 digs each match. Sophomore
Kadence Woodlief and Mounce each had 15 digs in the first match, while Woodlief recorded 17 in the second match against the Pacers.
The Cougars are back on the road on Tuesday when they travel to Roanoke, Virginia, for a conference matchup against Hollins University at 6:30 p.m.
