Yates stars as men’s soccer plays Roanoke to scoreless tie

SALEM, Va. – In cold conditions, Averett University men's soccer fought valiantly to a scoreless draw at Roanoke College on Wednesday night.

Roanoke (7-2-3, 4-2-1 ODAC) piled on shots in the second half, but Tyler Yates broke down any offensive momentum for the Maroons, adding on three more saves to help preserve the goalless outing.

An eventful first 45 minutes were on the cards, as both teams took their chances, but to no result. Max Gaudry managed three of four shots for Averett (3-5-5, 0-4-2 ODAC), including two on target, both of which dealt away by opposing goalkeeper Luca Gustafson. The Cougars faced more pressure from the Maroons, but shotstopper Yates was at the call, who made six saves alone. Yates' six first period saves tied a season record, the other instance being at Washington and Lee on Oct. 5.

By the final whistle, a new season high number in stops was set by the graduate student, with nine. This marked his most in a single game since Oct. 10, 2021, when Yates saved 10 shots at William Peace.

Averett mustered 10 shots on the night, with three on goal.

In the two teams' history, the tie is only their second ever, with the last dating back to a Sept. 19 game in 1990.

Next up, men's soccer kicks off homecoming festivities on Saturday, Oct. 19, with an 11:30 a.m. conference matinee against Eastern Mennonite University at Daly Field at Frank R. Campbell Stadium.
