DANVILLE, Va. – Averett University men's soccer dropped a 2-0 decider to the University of Lynchburg on Wednesday night at Daly Field at Frank R. Campbell Stadium.
Lynchburg (4-2-2, 2-1 ODAC) grabbed the early advantage from Zach Whelan off of a corner, heading the ball into the bottom left corner and past the backline in the sixth minute. The Hornets kept the offensive pressure going, but Cougar shotstopper
Tyler Yates prevented more potential scores with four saves in the first period alone.
Down to ten men before the clock ticked past 50 minutes, undermanned Lynchburg found its second goal in the 67th, as Pat Figaro slotted a low-placed shot into the right corner. Averett (3-4-3, 0-3 ODAC) pieced together some momentum late, but Hornet goalkeeper Thomas Viscuso made a number of saves down the stretch to maintain the shutout.
The Cougars totaled seven shots, and Yates matched a season-high with six more saves versus the Hornets.
Averett next travels to in-state Lexington this weekend, facing off against Washington and Lee for a 4 p.m. kickoff on Saturday, Oct. 5.
