LEXINGTON, Va. — Averett University football opened Old Dominion Athletic Conference play with a 35-0 loss at Washington and Lee University on Saturday evening.
Both teams burned through the first quarter with only one possession. Washington and Lee (2-2, 1-0 ODAC) opened the game with a 15-play, 71-yard drive that ate up more than eight minutes of clock. It culminated with Anthony Crawford's 1-yard touchdown run that helped the Generals inch in front 7-0. Averett (2-2, 0-1 ODAC) also used up the clock with its running attack, picking up three first downs as the possession spanned into the second quarter. However, the drive stalled out on the Washington and Lee 35-yard line.
Washington and Lee added to its lead on its ensuing possession by marching down the field on eight plays for another Crawford score — this time a 2-yard rush to make it 14-0 with 9:54 left in the second quarter. Crawford added his third touchdown of the day just before halftime as Washington and Lee took advantage of a Cougars' fumble to take a 21-0 lead into the break.
With a comfortable lead, Washington and Lee continued to use its running attack to its advantage. The Generals added two more rushing touchdowns in the second half while keeping Averett's offense in check.
Averett's defense was led by junior linebacker Anthony Brunelli's 10 tackles, with sophomore defensive lineman Marte' Simmons adding a sack.
Averett travels to Bridgewater College for another ODAC matchup on Oct. 12. Kickoff is slated for 2 p.m.
