DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University women's soccer played out a 6-0 90 minutes against No. 13 Washington and Lee University.
Averett (1-6-2, 0-3-0 ODAC) showed impressive grit and tenacity playing against No. 13 Washington and Lee (8-1-0, 3-0-0 ODAC) as the Cougars weathered a relentless attack from the Generals. The first half of play saw Washington and Lee launch cross after cross at the Cougars' net, before finally breaking the ice in the 25th minute to take the lead.
The Generals continued to display why they are worthy of their lofty national ranking, dominating possession and sending a near constant barrage of shots in the direction of sophomore Tiia Chrons patrolling the Averett goal. Chrons played brilliantly alongside her back line of defenders to keep the Generals' offense at bay early. The Cougars' defensive unit, headed up by graduate student Clarice Peters and senior Raylei Smith in the middle, contributed to the valiant defensive effort with blocked shot after blocked shot.
Washington and Lee's continued pressure paid off big in the second half. The Generals pounced early and kept the pressure on throughout, pulling ahead until the final whistle sounded with the scoreboard showing 6-0. Chrons finished the match with 13 saves.
Averett women's soccer is back on the road to take on Hollins University in conference play, with kickoff set for 2 p.m. Saturday.
