ROCK HILL, S.C. — Averett University men's basketball lost its exhibition game at Division I Winthrop University 99-56 on Wednesday.
A non-countable game for Averett, the Cougars held their own against the Eagles during the first half. Averett and Winthrop (6-3) were tied 5-5 before the Eagles went on an 8-0 run. Winthrop led 49-35 after the first 20 minutes and the pulled away in the second half.
Junior Davion Bowens led Averett with 11 points, eight rebounds and two blocks, while freshman Mason Mitchell had 11 points. Freshman Jackson Sellars chipped in nine points.
Averett returns to action on Dec. 4 at Ferrum College.
