Game Notes: Averett vs. Mary Washington
The Series: Mary Washington leads the young series against Averett, 4-0, since its first in 1997. Last time out, the Eagles defeated the Cougars, 65-35 in Danville on Nov. 21, 2023.
Averett at a Glance: The Grant Center was treated to Averett University women's basketball's most entertaining contest of the young season, as Hollins University visited for a conference matchup. All four quarters were as closely contested as possible, but the visitors would be victorious by the end, 66-61 by games' end. Sams and America tied all Cougars for the most points with 12 each. The latter grabbed seven rebounds, tied with Coleman for most on the team. Giggetts marked yet another game with double-digit points, with 10. Coleman distributed the ball well, with a game-high and career-high five assists. As a team, the Cougars made a season-high seven three-pointers, and led in the rebound margin 53-50. Averett also had its season-high in assists, with 14.
Mary Washington at a Glance: Breana Valentine and Megan Baxter led the University of Mary Washington women's basketball team with 13 and 10 points each as the Eagles fell to Southern Virginia on Saturday afternoon in Fredericksburg, Va., 63-51. Though the final score might not indicate, but UMW played the Knights closely all game, trailing by five or fewer points -- even leading by two possessions at one point -- against a team that upset No. 7 Christopher Newport earlier this week. On the day, Mary Washington was 15-of-57 from the floor with a pair of 3-pointer's and 19 made shots from the free throw line. UMW's defense was stout all afternoon as it forced 24 turnovers, which included 13 steals, and three blocks. Valentine led the way with 13 points on 4-of-12 shooting, while Baxter was 3-of-10, which included a 3-pointer. Valentine recorded five steals, while Baxter had four of her own.
