HENDERSONVILLE, Tenn. — No. 17 Averett University men's wrestling completed at the Gator "Boots" Duals hosted by Luther College on Saturday. The Cougars' first team went 1-3.
 
Averett opened the day with a dominant 51-3 win over Muskingum University. The Cougars won nine of the 10 matchups. Senior Mauricio Reyes, freshman Andres Cortes, junior Michael Gabbard and junior Braeden Fluke all won by fall.

The Cougars lost to No. 14 Loras College 35-9 in Round 2. Fluke picked up his second win by fall on the day at heavyweight, while nationally ranked senior Mason Barrett won with a 1-0 decision at 125 to account for Averett's points.

Averett fell 31-16 to No. 16 Delaware Valley University in Round 4. Barrett picked up an 11-1 major decision at 125 over nationally ranked Malik Asfour, junior Xavier Swanson won by fall (3:36) at 165 and junior Jacob Jimenez won by fall (4:58) at 197.

The Cougars finished the day with a 27-14 loss to Ursinus College. Barrett and sophomore A.J. Orlando III both won by decision to give Averett a 6-0 lead. After Ursinus jumped ahead 12-6, Swanson's 19-3 tech fall pulled the Cougars back within 12-11. Although Jimenez added a 7-3 decision at 197, it wasn't enough for Averett to come from behind.

Averett had a second team also competing in the duals. That squad fell 35-6 to Cornell College's second team. Juniors Wyatt Parker and Carter Erickson both won by decision for the Cougars against Cornell. Averett's second team also fell 40-9 to Loras' second team. Junior Landon Neal won with a 7-1 decision, while senior Jasiri Dingle won by fall (6:34) at heavyweight.

Averett breaks for the holidays before traveling to Shenandoah University for Old Dominion Athletic Conference action on Jan. 9.
