DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University men's basketball fell 62-52 in a non-conference matchup with Pfeiffer University on Tuesday in the Grant Center.
A tight game throughout, Averett (5-6) led 46-45 midway through the second half. However, Pfeiffer (5-3) used an 8-0 run to take control over the next four minutes. Although Averett kept it a two-possession game down the stretch, the Cougars couldn't get a timely basket as Pfeiffer extended its lead to double digits with free throws over the final minute.
Averett played well, but its offense cooled in the second half and shot 20.7 percent from the floor to finish at 30 percent for the game. The Cougars led for more than half the game as the two teams swapped leads 13 times. Averett opened the game with an 8-2 advantage and let by as many as seven points midway through the first period before the Cougars and Falcons went into halftime knotted at 31-31.
