BREVARD, N.C. — Averett University baseball lost to Brevard College 10-6 on Saturday afternoon.
Going into the third inning, Averett (0-3, 0-0 ODAC) was down 5-0. Junior
Caden Grider came up big with a homerun over the left field fence. Junior
Mason Williams and sophomore
Trevor Testerman got walked. Sophomore
Chris Byrd swatted a single into right field to score Williams, making the score 5-2.
Brevard (3-0, 0-0 USA South) got on the board in the first inning with a, RBI-double followed by a homerun. The Tornados kept hot bats going into the second inning, scoring two more runs to lead 5-0. In the third and fourth, Brevard scored two more runs to make the score 7-2. In the top of the seventh, junior
Preston Robbins poked a single into right field. Junior
Kevin Zischke roped a double to send Robbins to third. Grider was walked to load the bases, then Williams was walked to score Robbins to make the score 7-3.Â
Between the seventh and eighth innings, Brevard tacked on three additional runs to give the Tornados a 10-3 lead. In the top of the ninth, Zischke knocked a single into center field and Grider was walked to put runners on first and second. Williams flied out to center, allowing Zischke to advance to third. Brandt Brophy smacked a single into center field to score Zischke and advance Grider to second. Grider went on to score on a throwing error.
Zischke went 2-for-4 on the day. Grider went 1-for-2 with a homerun. Williams went 1-for-2 as well with an RBI.
The Cougars are back in action on Feb. 17 when they host Gettysburg College for a doubleheader beginning at noon.
