DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University baseball defeated Gettysburg College 14-7 in Game 1 and lost 17-11 in Game 2 on Saturday at Owen-Fulton Field.
Going into the bottom of the eighth of Game 1, Averett (1-4, 0-0 ODAC) was tied up with Gettysburg (1-1, 0-0 CC) 5-5. Freshman
Jack Turner led off with a double into center field. This sparked a rally, the Cougars strung together eight hits with three for extra bases and eight RBI's to allow them to lead the Bullets 14-5.
Gettysburg got out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning after an RBI-triple followed by an error. Sophomore
Trevor Testerman answered back after he belted a homerun over the left field fence. In the bottom of the third, Testerman ripped a triple into right field. Senior
Brandt Brophy followed up with a double down the left field line to send Testerman home to make the score even at 2-2.
In the top of the fourth, the bullets took the lead once more after a hitter was walked followed by an error in center field. In the bottom of the inning, junior
Preston Robbins swatted a single down the right field line and later stole second. Ultimately, Robbins scored after junior
Mason Williams poked a single into right field to make the score 3-3.Â
In the fifth, Brophy led off with a double down the right field line. Junior
Caden Grider advanced Brophy after laying down a sacrifice bunt. Brophy managed to score on a passed ball. The Cougars extended their lead in the top of the seventh. Testerman cracked a double into left center and later advanced to third and came home after a wild pitch to lead 5-3. In the top of the eighth, the Bullets tied things up 5-5. In the ninth, Gettysburg scored two more runs, but were not able to edge the Cougars in Game 1.
In Game 2, Gettysburg jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead in the first inning. Brophy singled up the middle in the beginning of the bottom half of the inning. Grider was walked and Brophy eventually went around to score on a few wild pitches followed by an RBI-single by junior
Gavin Colwell. In the second, the Bullets extended their lead to 6-1. In the bottom half of the inning, the Cougars answered back. Freshman
Drew Skinner led off with a single to left center. After a couple of wild pitches, the Cougars strung together some hits to close the gap, making the score 6-5.Â
Gettysburg further extended its lead in the top of the fourth, adding a run to the tally. Williams led off the bottom of the inning with a single. He eventually went around to score after an RBI-single from Brophy. The Cougars tied the game up after an RBI-double off the bat of Grider. In the fifth, the Cougars struggled defensively, allowing Gettysburg to get a 13-7 lead. Averett managed to bring the deficit within three.Â

Calder Garris swatted a single through the left side. Garris eventually went around to score. Robbins ripped an RBI-double through the left side and another runner scored on a sacrifice fly later in the inning. The Cougars managed to score one more run, but were not able to overcome the deficit.
The Cougars are back in action on Tuesday when they host Greensboro College at 2 p.m.
