DANVILLE, Va. - Averett University men's lacrosse picked up its first win of the season in record setting fashion 29-1 over Warren Wilson College on Saturday.
Averett (1-4, 0-1 ODAC) scored its first goal of the day from sophomore
Cameron Shadduck. Freshman
Connor Boyd scored his first collegiate goal from fellow freshman
Tigran Ceesay. The Cougars scored seven unanswered goals in the first period. Averett scored an additional seven goals taking a 14-0 lead into halftime with sophomore
Emmett Wood leading the way with four goals in the first half.
Shadduck opened up the second half with second goal of the day before the Cougars erupted scoring nine goals in the third period lead by Wood and junior
Dawson Hobbs, Hobbs scored three-straight goals in the third. Wood posted four more goals in the second half and giving him eight goals and 10 points (eight goals, two assists) on the day to set a new program record for goals scored in a game and finish one point shy of the record for points scored in a game.
Averett also set a program record for most goals scored in a game taking down the previous record of 25 goals scored in a game which was set in 2022 victory against Warren Wilson on Daly Field at Frank R. Campbell Stadium. The Cougars combined for 29 goals and 12 assists for a program record 41 points.
The Cougars saw 11 different scorers in the match-up with Wood having a team-high eight, Hobbs posting a career-high eight points (six goals, two assists). Ceesay also had a career day with four goals and three assists, senior
Brayton Powers also tallied a hat trick to go along with two assists for five points.
Averett also posted program records for shots, shots on goal and ground balls. The Cougars posted 72 shots with 48 shots on goal while picking up 59 ground balls. Averett had a season-low 11 turnovers while having a season-high 22-22 on clear attempts. The Cougars also tied a program record for faceoffs won with 22.
Freshman
Giovanni D'Amico had a team-high 13 ground balls while sophomore
Casey Peterson had three caused turnovers.
Averett is back in action when it travels to William Peace at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.
