LEXINGTON, Va. — Averett University men's basketball fell 61-44 to Washington and Lee University after the Generals used a big run in the second half to pull away in Saturday's Old Dominion Athletic Conference matchup.
Â
Tied 25-25 at halftime, Averett (4-18, 2-11 ODAC) took the lead to start the second half on a dunk by senior
Jason Sellars II. The battle remained a one-possession game midway through the period as the Cougars trailed 43-40 after senior
Jordan Lewis' jumper with 11:19 to play. Yet, Averett's offense went cold as Washington and Lee (14-7, 8-4 ODAC) ended the game with an 18-4 run to seize the win.
Lewis led Averett with 13 points, while Sellars had 12 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Junior
Bryce Shaw chipped in eight points and six boards for the Cougars.
Averett opened the game in control, taking a 16-10 advantage in the first nine minutes. The Generals inched ahead, but Lewis' jumper in the final 31 seconds of the half knotted the game going into halftime.
Averett returns home for Senior Night as the Cougars host No. 1 Hampden-Sydney College on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
