DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University men's wrestling fell to No. 20 Roanoke College 22-12 on Saturday evening in the Grant Center.

Averett (20-6, 4-2 ODAC) was down 19-3 against Roanoke (13-3, 6-0 ODAC) going into the 174-pound bout. Khalil Mitchell gave the Cougars a shimmer of hope when he defeated Xavier Preston, who is ranked No. 4 in the region. Senior George Moseley followed up with another decision win to bring the score to 19-9.

In the 125-pound weight class, junior Mason Barrett was neck-and-neck with Mac Cafurello. Barrett is ranked No. 6 in the nation and Cafurello is ranked No. 13. It was deep in overtime and Cafurello got the decision against Barret due to riding time. At 133 pounds, freshman A.J. Orlando III lost to Jude Robson, who is ranked No. 3 in the region. In the 141-pound weight class, senior Mauricio Reyes lost to Mark Samuel, who is ranked No. 7 in the nation. 

Junior Jesse Alvarado defeated Zachary Turner by an 8-3 decision at 149 pounds. Sophomore Xavier Swanson lost to Andrew McDougal in the 165-pound weight class, junior Anthony Taylor lost to Jacob Cherry in a 15-7 major decision. Senior Jamar Christian lost to Lorenzo Pellot in the 197-pound weight class by a decision. Heavyweight senior Trent Ragland defeated Brady Elswick in a 4-0 decision.

The Cougars are back in action on Feb. 17 when they host the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Championships beginning at 11 a.m.
