LEXINGTON, Va. — Averett University baseball fell to Washington and Lee University 8-7 in Game 1 and later 16-7 to finish an Old Dominion Athletic Conference doubleheader on Sunday afternoon.
In Game 1, Averett (3-13, 0-2 ODAC) was down 8-6 in the top of the eighth inning. With two outs, junior
Kevin Zischke got the Cougars within one run of tying the Generals after he belted a home run over the left field fence.
The Cougars struck first in Game 1. Junior
Preston Robbins knocked a double down the left field line. He went around to score on a single hit by redshirt junior
Luke Harris. Washington and Lee (7-5, 3-1 ODAC) answered back in the bottom of the fourth inning. After some defensive struggles by the Cougars and a couple of extra base knocks, they scored 7 to take the lead and tacked on an additional run in the bottom of the fifth. In the top of the sixth, sophomore
Trevor Testerman swatted a single up the middle. Robbins hit his second double of the game to send Testerman to third. Harris reached first on a error on the first baseman, which allowed Testerman to score. Sophomore
Chris Byrd reached first on a fielder's choice to score Robbins.Â
The Cougars had a big inning in the top of the seventh. Zischke was walked. Junior
Mason Williams sent Zischke to third after he singled to right field. Zischke went on to score after a sacrifice fly hit by senior Brant Brophy. Testerman was hit by pitch to advance Williams to second. Robbins reached on a fielder's choice that advanced Williams to third. Williams scored on a wild pitch. Robbins ended up crossing home plate after a single hit to left center by Harris.
In Game 2, Washington and Lee started off hot. In the first inning, the Generals hit a three-run blast and went on to score three additional runs to be up 6-0. In the top of the top of the third, junior
Caden Grider was walked. Zischke hit a single into right field to put runners on first and second. Williams laid down a bunt to load the bases. Brophy singled to score Grider. Testerman reached on a fielder's choice that got Zischke out at home. Robbins hit a single down the left field line to score Williams.
In the top of the fourth, junior
Gavin Colwell roped a triple into center field and came around to score on a sacrifice fly hit by freshman
Drew Skinner. In the bottom of the fourth, Washington and Lee hit its second home run of the day. The Generals went on to score five more runs to lead 11-4 and tacked on three more by the fifth inning. Williams reached second in the top of the seventh after a couple of errors. Brophy reached first on another error, which sent Williams to third. Testerman ripped a two-RBI triple into right center. Testerman crossed home on a wild pitch. The Generals added two more runs in the bottom half of the inning.
The Cougars are back in action on Saturday when they go up against Bridgewater College for a home doubleheader.
