DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University baseball fell to Bridgewater College 9-2 in Game 1 and 8-1 in Game 2 of its doubleheader on Saturday afternoon on Owen-Fulton Field.
In the bottom of the fifth, Averett (3-15, 0-4 ODAC) got on the board. senior
Brandt Brophy poked a single into center field with two outs. Sophomore
Trevor Testerman smoked a double down the left field line to score Brophy.
In Game 1, Bridgewater (14-6, 3-1 ODAC) struck first in the top of the first inning. The Eagles added to their lead in the early innings, making the score 5-0 by the fourth inning. In the bottom of the sixth of Game 1, junior
Gavin Colwell led off with a single down the left field line. Redshirt Junior
Luke Harris was hit by pitch to send Colwell to second. Freshman
Maddox Jordan came in to pinch run for Harris. On a sacrifice bunt by freshman
Jack Turner, Jordan and Colwell advanced to second and third. Colwell went around to score after a groundout hit by junior
Caden Grider to the shortstop. The Eagles tacked on seven runs in the later innings.
In Game 2, Bridgewater got its first run in the first inning to lead 1-0. The Eagles steadily extended their lead, throughout the game. In the bottom of the seventh, freshman
Drew Skinner was walked. Zischke swatted a single up the middle to put runners on first and second. Junior
Mason Williams was walked to load the bases. Skinner scored off of a groundout from Brophy.
In Game 2, junior
Preston Robbins went 2-for-4 with a double. Zischke went 3-for-4 with a double. In Game 1, Colewell went 2-for-4 with a double.
The Cougars are back in action on Tuesday when they travel to face William Peace University at 4 p.m.
