RALEIGH, N.C. — Averett University softball fell to William Peace University 5-4 in Game 1 and 6-5 in Game 2 of Friday's doubleheader.
In the seventh inning of Game 2, the Averett (3-9, 0-0 ODAC) trailed William Peace (8-8, 0-0 USA South) 4-6. Zabik led off with a single. She later advanced to second on a groundout. George hit an RBI-single to cut the Pacers lead down to one run.
William Peace struck first in the third inning to lead the Cougars 2-0. In the top of the fourth, freshman
Molly George led off with a double into center field and later stole third. Senior
Taylor Sullivan slapped a double down the left field line to score George. Junior
Angela Rodriguez poked a single into right field to send Sullivan home. Freshman Allie Testerman came in to pinch run for Rodriguez. Sophomore
Kailey Gates swatted a single into center to score Testerman. Freshman
Mackenzie Newcomb followed-up with another RBI-single to give the Cougars a 4-2 lead. William Peace tied everything up in the bottom of the fifth and took the lead in the sixth.
The Pacers scored a run to lead the Cougars 1-0 after the first inning. In the top of the third, freshman
Madison Akers hit a single through the left side. Sophomore
Hannah Zabik was walked to put runners on first and second. Freshman
Kadence Woodlief slapped a single through the left side to score Akers and send Zabik to third. Sullivan was walked to load the bases. George was hit by pitch to give the Cougars a 2-1 lead.
The Pacers tied things up in the bottom of the third following a double and an RBI-single. William Peace took the lead in the bottom of the fourth 3-2. In the fifth, Zabik hit a single up the middle. Woodlief followed-up with a single of her own to put runners on first and second. Sullivan smoked a double into center field, Woodlief and Zabik scored on an error by the catcher to take the lead. The Cougars gave up three runs in the fifth inning to trail 6-4.
