CARY, N.C. — Averett University baseball defeated William Peace University 8-6 on Tuesday evening.
The Cougars were down 6-5 going into the top of the eighth. Junior
Kevin Zischke led off with a single into right field. Freshman
Drew Skinner slapped a single into right field to advance Zischke to second. Freshman
Tyler Lowe loaded the bases with a single into left. Turner singled up the middle to score Zischke and Skinner. Freshman
Cameron Carson extended the Cougars' lead after an RBI-double hit into left.
Carson walked to lead off the first inning for Averett (4-15, 0-4 ODAC). Senior
Brandt Brophy swatted a single into center field to put Carson in scoring position at second. Sophomore
Trevor Testerman laid down a bunt single. Carson scored on a throwing error by the pitcher. Junior
Gavin Colwell laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners to second and third. Brophy scored on a groundout hit to second base by fZischke. Freshman
Maddox Jordan was walked. A couple more batters were walked to walk home a run to allow the Cougars to lead 3-0.
In the bottom of the first, the Cougars struggled to find the strike zone. After three walks and a couple of hits, William Peace (5-12, 0-0 USA South) took a 4-3 lead. In the top of the second, Testerman got on with a single and later stole second. Colwell poked an RBI-single through the left side to score Testerman and tie things up 4-4. In the top of the fourth, freshman
Jack Turner led off with a triple hit into right center. The Cougars took the lead after Carson hit a sacrifice fly to score Turner. After some pitching struggles from the Cougars, William Peace took a 6-5 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning.
In 5.1 innings pitched, junior
Cole McLain had a great outing after he came in to pitch in relief in the fourth inning. He allowed just three hits and recorded three strikeouts.
The Cougars are back in action on Wednesday when they face Roanoke College at 7 p.m.
