VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Averett University men's lacrosse dropped Saturday's road contest against Virginia Wesleyan University, 26-5.
Averett (2-8) made the trip to fellow Old Dominion Athletic Conference member Virginia Wesleyan (4-4) for a rare non-conference match-up. The Marlins jumped out and put Averett in a big hole early, 9-0 in favor of the home side at the end of the first quarter.
Freshman
Tigran Ceesay netted the Cougar's first goal in the opening seconds of quarter two, finding the twine at the 14:47 mark. Ceesay continued to drive Averett's offensive efforts in the quarter, scoring his second of the day late to send the game to halftime, 18-2.
The Cougar's played a successful third quarter, with goals coming from sophomore
Emmett Wood, senior
Connor Taff, and junior
Dawson Hobbs. The trio of goals for Averett, paired with a heightened defensive intensity, allowed the Cougars to win the 15 minute frame, 3-2.
Averett's newfound success did not carry into the fourth quarter. Virginia Wesleyan extended its lead with six goals, bringing the score to 26-5 at the final whistle.
The Cougars are back in action at home on Wednesday, March 27 at 7 p.m. to take on Hampden-Sydney College and get the bulk of the ODAC slate underway.
