ASHLAND, Va. – Averett University women's lacrosse dropped its ODAC opener on the road against Randolph-Macon college.
Averett (1-4, 0-1 ODAC) tallied one first quarter goal off the stick of junior Faith Bowlin. The Cougar's star extended her team-scoring lead with the early strike, her 12th of the season. Randolph-Macon (6-3, 1-1 ODAC) carried a 6-1 advantage after the first quarter.
Averett's offense started to click in the second quarter. The Cougars netted three goals in the frame as they fought to hang with the Yellow Jackets. Averett's scores came from freshmen Ava Soucek and Gracie Kean, as well as Bowlin's second of the day. Randolph-Macon weathered the storm well, however, and headed into halftime ahead, 14-4.
The Yellow Jackets opened up their lead in the early stages of the second half, before freshman Kait Cashman scored for the Cougars. Bowlin notched another goal, her third, to close out the third quarter and secure a hat trick for the junior. The game's final whistle sounded after an uneventful fourth quarter with the score in favor of Randolph-Macon, 20-6.
The Cougars take the field next on Wednesday, March 27 at 3 p.m. to battle with Brevard College on the road.
