BREVARD, N.C. – Averett University women's lacrosse dropped a tight game on the road against Brevard College.
Averett (1-5, 0-1 ODAC) opened the game on the right foot once again, senior
Irenia Torre put the Cougars on the board first at the 4:43 mark in the first quarter. Brevard (5-4, 2-0 USA South) answered back on a player-up opportunity in the late stages of the quarter, ending the first 15 minutes in a 1-1 tie.
The Cougars opened up the scoring in the second quarter as well. Freshman
Cayden Holdsworth put Averett back ahead early on, before Brevard clawed its way back to the lead. Averett once again evened the score, this time off the stick of freshman
Ava Soucek, as the Cougars pulled even at 3-3. Brevard tallied another score before the close of the quarter, sending the game to the halftime break at 4-3.
The back and forth contest continued into the third quarter. While junior
Faith Bowlin and freshman
Kait Cashman found the back of the net, Averett's offensive efforts were powered by
Cayden Holdsworth's career day. As Averett fought to stay close to the Tornados, the freshman added two more goals in the third frame. In spite of the Cougar's successful scoring, Brevard extended its lead to 10-7 going into the fourth quarter.
Ava Soucek scored early in the final frame, with an assist from Holdsworth, who was far from finished for the day. Holdsworth scored another pair of goals in just 32 seconds in the fourth quarter, pushing her total for the day up to five. Holdsworth's scoring outburst drew the Cougars within striking distance, but Averett's run stopped just short. The final whistle sounded with Brevard ahead, 13-10.
After a long road swing Averett returns to friendly confines for its next action. The Cougars are celebrating senior day as they host Shenandoah University in ODAC play on Saturday, March 30 at 11 a.m.
