DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University baseball fell to Carolina University 4-0 in Game 1 and won 13-3 by a run rule after the top of the fifth in Game 2 on Tuesday afternoon at Owen-Fulton Field.
Freshman
Cameron Carson had his first collegiate at-bat to lead off the first inning. He smoked a ball to the warning track in right field for a standup triple and later scored on a groundout to give Averett (3-11, 0-0 ODAC) momentum in Game 2.
In Game 1, sophomore
Michael Pellegrino got the start. He held Carolina scoreless and without a hit through four innings. In the fifth, the Bruins drew a walk to lead off the inning. A single through the left side followed by a bunt-single to load the bases. One run came into score after a wild pitch. After getting two outs, Carolina (7-5) hit an RBI-single to make the score 2-0. Cole McLain came in to relieve Pellegrino. After allowing two runs to score, McLain got a strikeout to get the Cougars out of the inning. In the bottom of the sixth, freshman
Jack Turner was walked. Junior
Mason Williams swatted a single into center field to advance Turner to second. Senior
Brandt Brophy smacked a single into left center field to score Turner.
In Game 2, In the bottom of the third, the Cougars went on a rally. Sophomore
Trevor Testerman reached first on a fielding error by the second baseman and later stole second. Junior
Preston Robbins reached on an error as well. Freshman
Drew Skinner poked a single into right center to load the bases. Turner ripped a double into left center to score Testerman and Robbins. Freshman
Tyler Lowe got his first collegiate hit after he doubled down the left field line to score two more runs for the Cougars. Freshman
Maddox Jordan singled to right field and later stole second. The Cougars went on to score two more in the inning to extend their lead to 8-0. In the bottom of the fourth, the Cougars tacked on five more runs. In the top of the fifth, the Bruins managed to score 3 before the final out.
In Game 2, the Cougars hit 12 RBI's as a team and had an impressive .483 batting average. Carson went 2-for-4 with a triple, Brophy went 2-for-4 with two RBI's. Robbins went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI's.Â
