DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University softball split a conference doubleheader with Sweet Briar College on Tuesday as the Cougars won 6-0 before falling 4-0 in Game 2.
In the opener, Averett (11-11, 5-1 ODAC) inched out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning on freshman
Kadence Woodlief's RBI single. That lone run stood as the only run for either team until Averett broke it open in the sixth inning to pull away.
In the sixth, with two runners aboard, senior
Taylor Sullivan tried to bunt the runners over but ended up getting a single. The late throw hit Sullivan, allowing sophomore
Hannah Zabik to score. Freshman
Molly George added an RBI single, sophomore
Mackenzi Luckenbaugh smacked a two-run double down the right field line and junior
Hannah Jones finished with an RBI single up the middle.
Sullivan earned the win in the circle, her third in as many games. She struck out seven while allowing only three hits with no walks while going the distance for a complete game.
Sullivan and Luckenbaugh accounted for two hits each in Game 1.
In Game 2, Averett's offense was silenced by the arm of Ambyre Taylor, who didn't allow a hit to the Cougars' until the bottom of the seventh on a pinch-hit single by freshman
Shea Donoghue.
Sweet Briar (9-12, 2-6 ODAC) scored three runs in the fifth and added an insurance run in the sixth. Averett threatened in the seventh by getting two runners aboard.
Averett travels to No. 8 Randolph-Macon College on Saturday.
