Softball loses pair of ODAC games at No. 8 Randolph-Macon

ASHLAND, Va. — Averett University softball lost a pair of games to No. 8 Randolph-Macon College on Saturday, falling 7-0 in Game 1 and 11-2 in six innings in Game 2.

In the opener, Randolph-Macon (14-2-2, 5-1 ODAC) got a solo homer in the first, then an RBI single in the third to take a 2-0 advantage. The nationally ranked Yellow Jackets then added three insurance runs, including two on another homer, in the fifth inning before scoring two more runs in the sixth to pull away from Averett (11-13, 5-3 ODAC).

Freshman Kadence Woodlief had two of Averett's four hits in Game 1.

Averett's offense broke through in the opening frame of Game 2 as Woodlief homered to center field to put the Cougars in front, 1-0. However, Randolph-Macon scored twice in the bottom of the inning to take the lead.

In the top of the second, sophomore Kailey Gates had an RBI single to knot the game, 2-2. Yet, once again, Randolph-Macon had an answer. The Yellow Jackets plated four runs in the bottom of the second to go ahead 6-2.

Randolph-Macon added another run in the fifth and four more in the sixth to end the game early.

Woodlief and Gates accounted for two hits each as Averett finished with seven hits in Game 2.

Averett continues its weekend roadtrip on Sunday at No. 12 Virginia Wesleyan University.
