DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University baseball fell to Hampden-Sydney College 16-4 in Game 1 and 17-6 in Game 2 of its senior day doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.
Averett (8-25, 4-14 ODAC) was down 5-0 going into the bottom of the third inning. Junior
Kevin Zischke smoked a double into left field and later took third on a passed ball. Graduate student
Nolan Maccabe belted a two-run homerun over the left field wall to make the score 5-2.
Hamden-Sydney (14-17, 8-11 ODAC) struck first in Game 1, scoring a run in the top of the first. The Tigers had a big inning in the second to get a 5-0 lead. Going into the bottom of the seventh, Hampden-Sydney led 11-2. Sophomore
Trevor Testerman poked a single into left field. Zischke clobbered a pitch over the fence down the right field line to make the score 11-4. The Tigers steadily increased their lead, scoring five more runs throughout the next two innings.
In Game 2, Averett had a productive first inning. Zischke led off with single up the middle. Junior
Mason Williams swatted a single through the left side. Zischke got out at third after junior
Preston Robbins hit into a fielder's choice to the shortstop. Testerman roped a two-RBI-single into center field, scoring Williams and Robbins. Freshman
Drew Skinner poked a single through the right side to score Testerman to extend Averett's lead to 3-0.
The Tigers put up two runs in the second inning to cut Averett's lead down to just one run. In the bottom of the third, Testerman led off with a single. Skinner reached first on a throwing error by the center fielder and it allowed Testerman to score. Senior
Hudson Rowe slapped a single to second base to put Skinner on third. Junior
Caden Grider hit a ball into right field, that was able to score Skinner on the sacrifice fly.Â
In the top of the sixth, Hampden-Sydney scored one run to bring the Tigers within two runs of the Cougars. Averett had defensive struggles in the seventh, allowing nine runs to score. By the eighth inning, the Tigers led 16-5. In the bottom of the eighth, Grider was walked and later advanced to third on two wild pitches. Grider scored on a fielding error.Â
The Cougars are back in action on Tuesday when they travel to face Ferrum at 3 p.m.
