DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University's men's tennis took down University of Lynchburg 5-1 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Tournament quarterfinals Tuesday at the Averett Tennis Courts, sending the Cougars to Saturday's semifinals.
Averett (9-7), the No. 3 seed, fell behind initially 1-0 after six-seeded Lynchburg (10-6) won No. 1 doubles 8-2. However, the Cougars' sophomore duo Sam Egui and Martin Guyot won 8-3 at No. 3 doubles. Junior Jaeden Mukkaladyil and sophomore Kazuki Fukushima fended off their opponents 8-4 at No. 2 doubles to put Averett ahead 2-1 entering singles play.
Freshman Alex Rudy won easily for Averett at No. 6 singles, 6-0, 6-0. Meanwhile, sophomore Prabjeet Chandhok also earned a victory at No. 4 singles, winning 6-1, 6-0. Averett clinched it thanks to Mukkaladyil's win at No. 2 singles. He won 6-1, 6-0.
Averett advanced to Saturday's 11 a.m. semifinals against No. 2 seed Virginia Wesleyan University, which beat No. 7 Randolph College 5-0 on Tuesday in the quarterfinals. The semifinals and championship will be hosted in Virginia Beach, Virginia, by Virginia Wesleyan.
