DANVILLE, Va. — No. 47 Averett University women's tennis eased past Division II Winston-Salem State University 9-0 on the Averett Tennis Courts on a windy Friday afternoon.
The Cougars, nationally ranked for the first time in recent history, rolled past the Rams for their third consecutive win. Averett (9-4), which is now ranked No. 10 in the region, swept all three doubles matches. Junior Keira Gunning and freshman Siddhi Khandelwal, who are ranked No. 7 in the region in doubles, earned an 8-3 win at the No. 1 spot. Sophomore Brenda Poulakidas and freshman Dilara Sultanova won 8-0 at No. 2, while sophomore Franka Keil and freshman Ana Herrera won 8-2 at No. 3.
Averett head coach Bert Poole used a completely different six for singles play, but the Cougars got the same results against Winston-Salem State (3-8). Freshman Annika Kellerer and sophomore Elisa Battermann clinched the match with their straight-set wins at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively. Freshman Siddhi Khot won at No. 4 singles, 6-0, 6-0. Sophomore Harshri Asher and sophomore Amelie Schroeder also won in straight sets at No. 2 and No. 3. Freshman Jennika Jaison, the reigning Old Dominion Athletic Conference Player of the Week, finished off the match with a win at No. 1 singles, 6-4, 6-2.
Averett hosts University of Lynchburg in an ODAC matchup on Monday.
