VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Averett University softball lost both games of a conference doubleheader at No. 12 Virginia Wesleyan University on Sunday, falling 4-1 and 7-3.
Virginia Wesleyan (17-6, 7-1 ODAC) jumped ahead in Game 1 with an RBI double in the third inning. Although Averett (11-15, 5-5 ODAC) tied it when freshman
Ally Testerman scored on an error in the fourth, the Marlins got a two-run double and an RBI single in the fifth to go ahead 4-1, which proved to be the difference.
Sophomore
Hannah Zabik finished with two of Averett's six hits in Game 1.
In Game 2, Averett struck first in the top of the fourth when Testerman scored on a wild pitch. Junior
Hannah Jones followed with an RBI single to center, extending the Cougars' lead to 2-0.
After Virginia Wesleyan got a run back in the bottom of the fourth, the Marlins plated three runs in the fifth and sixth innings to surge ahead 7-1. Freshman
Mackenzie Newcomb scored on a throwing error in the seventh for Averett, but it wasn't enough.
Averett travels to Roanoke College on Wednesday for another ODAC matchup.
