VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Averett University women's lacrosse fell just short in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference clash with Virginia Wesleyan University, 13-8.
Averett (1-9, 0-5 ODAC) is making a habit of hot starts lately, and continued this trend against Virginia Wesleyan (5-6, 3-1 ODAC). The Cougars surrendered the game's first goal before quickly bouncing back. Senior
Porsha Davis broke the ice for the Cougars, her second goal in as many games, to knot things up at 1-1. The Marlins added another goal, but once again Averett answered. Junior
Faith Bowlin found the net in the closing seconds of quarter one, which closed in a 2-2 tie.
The Marlins opened the scoring in the second frame, just as they had in the first, before
Porsha Davis roared back. The senior added two more goals, securing a hat trick and pushing Averett ahead late in the second quarter. The resilient Virginia Wesleyan side rebounded from the deficit quickly, and took a 6-4 advantage into the break.
The third quarter did not light up the score sheet, as each side only added one goal to their totals. Bowlin scored on a player-down opportunity to keep the Cougars in striking distance, down 7-5 heading to the final 15 minutes of action.
Virginia Wesleyan iced the game with a run of five unanswered goals to open the fourth quarter. Averett fired back with three goals, coming from the freshman duo of
Gracie Kean and
Kait Cashman, as well as a third tally for Bowlin, but it was too late for the Cougars. The final whistle sounded with the score in favor of the Marlins, 13-8.
Averett is back home for its next contest, as the Cougars welcome the University of Lynchburg to Daly Field at Frank R. Campbell Stadium on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
