DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University baseball defeats Roanoke College 4-2 on Tuesday afternoon at Owen-Fulton Field.
The score was tied up 2-2 going into the bottom of the seventh inning. Senior
Brandt Brophy led off with a walk. Freshman
Drew Skinner was walked as well to put runners on first and second. Junior
Caden Grider laid down a sacrifice bunt to put the runners on second and third. Junior
Mason Williams cracked a single up the middle to score Brophy and Skinner, putting the Cougars up 4-2.
Averett (8-20, 4-9 ODAC) got on the board early in the first inning. Graduate student
Nolan Maccabe smoked a double into left center. Junior
Kevin Zischke crushed a triple down the left field line to score Maccabe. Junior
Preston Robbins poked a single into left field, scoring Zischke to lead 2-0.
Senior
Cole McLain started the game for Averett. He pitched three scoreless innings. The Maroons were able to score a run in the top of the fourth on an RBI-single. Roanoke (16-14, 10-4 ODAC) added a run to tie things up with an RBI-double. In the top of the seventh, freshman
Kendrick Sheffield came in to relieve
Cole McLain. Sheffield went to work, getting two quick outs to get the Cougars out of the inning. Sheffield stayed in until he gave up a single followed by a walk in the top of the ninth. Junior
Jake Braun came in to get the final out of the game with two runners on. Braun stepped off and got the lead runner at second caught in a rundown to get the final out and record the save.
Sheffield was awarded the win, going 2.1 innings with two strikeouts and no runs allowed. Robbins went 3-for-4 with an RBI.
The Cougars are back in action on Saturday when they go on the road to face No. 17 University of Lynchburg for a doubleheader beginning at noon.
