Men’s tennis falls in ODAC Championship to No. 28 Washington and Lee

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Averett University men's tennis lost 5-0 to No. 28 Washington and Lee University in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Tournament championship on Sunday.

Washington and Lee (17-7), the top seed, notched its 14th consecutive ODAC title in their 28th finals appearance in a row.

Second-seeded Averett (10-8) lost all three doubles matches despite strong fights to battle back from early deficits. At No. 3 doubles, sophomores Sam Egui and Martin Guyot led briefly 2-1 before the Generals surged ahead 5-2. Egui and Guyot eventually tied it, 6-6, before Washington and Lee's duo of James Kurani and Eli Hirshberg held on 8-6. At No. 2 doubles, junior Jaeden Mukkaladyil and sophomore Kazuki Fukushima fell behind 7-0. Although they won the next two games to get within 7-2, Washington and Lee won 8-2 in that matchup. The Cougars' No. 1 doubles tandem of sophomores Alex Donnelly and Prabjeet Chandhok were down 4-1 before coming back to get within 6-4. Even Erb and Will Kistler held on 8-4 to give the Generals a doubles sweep.

During singles play, the match was halted and delayed by rain. When it resumed, Washington and Lee won in straight sets at No. 3 singles to get the Generals one point away from clinching.

Washington and Lee won at No. 1 and No. 3 singles in straight sets to seal the win.
